Kekezzini hit Kouvola – City of Concrete

Hoy Mates!!

Lights on!

Good old Finnish Guerrilla support team Juho & Antti (also known as the kekezzini brothers) hit the streets of Kouvola Finland on the 30th of September. On this cold but yet so beautiful night the Guerrilla action was realized by the students from a local school of arts. Together with the great help of a local camera club and the city of Kouvola we pulled out a night never to forget!

This time the guerrilla action was a true audiovisual experience as the local musician, or should we say ‘soundscapearchitect’ Esa Kotilainen joined the team with some incredible live synthesizer music. Esa’s portable soundsystem was built on an old milkcart and the soundscapes he improvised on site. Respect!

Kouvola city is known from the extensive use of concrete in architecture so during daytime the city appears quite.. hmm… can we say… grey!?! But hey, this is just what every guerrilla is looking for, right!? And so were the hundreds of people who came to see what’s going on…

In the 3-day inaugural Guerrilla Lighting Student Workshop, students are inducted into the mysterious world of light, and will interact as a team to propose for designs for selected sites, whilst being inspired by lighting designers. Using simple, frills-free tools with tonnes of creativity, students will witness the transformation of seemingly mundane forgotten urban pockets into a mystical wonderland.

We’ve been planning to do this for ages and have finally found the time to make it happen.  Guerrilla Lighting was always intended to be an open source initiative designed to show the transformative power of good lighting and the importance of professional lighting design so here is the first draft of our “how to” guide.  Feedback welcome!

We hope you find it useful and that you stage your own events and contribute to the growing guerrilla movement.  Of course we’re always happy to help, advise or be involved so if you have any questions – drop us an e-mail.

GUERRILLA LIGHTING – How To Guide

The results for Guerrilla Lighting Southwark are now available in the Gallery.

It was a long night but we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Of course the event couldn’t have happened without the Guerrillas and Team Leaders. Thank you to everyone for their support of the event!

Guerrilla Lighting would like to acknowledge the Professional Lighting Designers Association as the initiator of this event.

Guerrilla Lighting is returning to London on the 30th June 2010 as part of the London Festival of Architecture.

We’ll be targeting six sites in Southwark.

The event is supported by Southwark Council, Better Bankside and Team London Bridge, PLDA and ILE and sponsored by Holophane Europe , Urbis and Fagerhult.

Last Saturday (12.12.09) a group consisting mostly of children aimed their torches at three targets in order to light up their own neighbourhood.

The neighbourhood with its surroundings are the former grounds and buildings of a mental hospital. The hospital was shut down in 1994 and the buildings were renovated into apartments after long debates in 2005.

The chosen targets consisted of the old administration building (not yet renovated), a group of trees and the old festival hall.

Big thanks to the Finnish ”City of Light”, Jyväskylä, for lending the torches!

After the award winning success of the previous Manchester Guerrilla Lighting event in 2006 and the following boom of events around the world Guerrilla lighting has returned to Manchester.

Guerrilla lighting is a war on bad lighting, guerrilla lighting is a protest against wasteful use of light, but most of all, guerrilla lighting is about having fun and raising the awareness of the power of light.

BDP Lighting would like to invite you to this year’s event taking place on the 1^st of December commencing at our Manchester studio with a brief presentation, guerrilla lighting and an after party at a nearby venue for everyone to celebrate the success of our evening.

Guerrilla Lighting returned to Belfast for the second time on the night of Friday 25th September as part of Culture Night Belfast.

A team of architecture students from Queen’s University Belfast created transient lighting designs for five sites around the city’s cultural Cathedral Quarter.

Thank you to everyone involved, especially the students, Kresanna Aigner, Keith McAllister and Tim Kerr.
